Prior Affordable Home Site Approved for Skate Park
On January 27, 2012, Huntington Beach City Council approved a lease agreement with VF Outdoor Inc. to construct a free, world class Vans skate park. Specifics of the three acre skate park project and an environmental review of the plan still have to come before the council for approvals.
Developer Center Partners, which previously leased the land, said last January that a residential development has been in the works for more than 20 years, according to a letter from its attorneys. The letter says the company submitted several plans for an affordable home development over the years but all were turned down.
However, City Attorney Jennifer McGrath said at that meeting that the company’s development agreement expired and the city reached out and invited Center Partners to submit a project.
The proposed skate park was identified in the City’s Housing Elementas an opportunity site for the development of 174 affordable homes. If the skate park moves forward, the City will have to find an alternative and adequate site for 174 affordable homes or apartments to fulfill state housing requirements.
